Special Education Program

Helensvale State School SEP (Special Education Program)
The Helensvale State School vision focuses on a ‘student first’ approach to inclusion, valuing each child with their unique abilities and needs. The reason we have Special Education Programs is to reflect this sense of proactive planning and programming for each child as an individual, focussing on what makes each one special.  The program is responsive, using a continuum of support to encourage the best possible access to learning and the curriculum.
This continuum represents all types of support provision from consultation alongside teachers to more intensive individualised programs, dependent on the level of resourcing available to the school.  A culture of collaboration and best practice intervention is employed within this service provision.  Staff involved in our SEP program currently includes the Head of Special Education Services (HOSES), SEP teachers assigned to managing student cases and our Teacher Aides (TA’s) working as a team to produce the best possible outcomes for students.  Examples of the types of programs we run or assist with at any given point include:
·         Social skills development
·         Social emotional regulation
·         Motor skills
·         Specific oral language development
·         English and Mathematics intervention
·         Response to Intervention groups
·         Individual behaviour management
·         Structured play during breaks
·         Classroom support

The SEP is located, near the Performing Arts Centre (PAC), adjacent to the Year One adventure playground and housed in our centre with Student Services and the behaviour team.  This allows us to work in collaboration and in response to the academic, social and emotional needs of our students.
Helensvale State School SEP tries to exemplify this adage in all that we do…
"Aerodynamically the bumblebee shouldn't be able to fly, but the bumblebee doesn't know that so it goes on flying anyway" - Mary Kay Ash
We focus on student ability, inspiring each to strive for success and reach their potential.  As educators, this is our inspiration.
